What is the best time to make an appointment with my child’s guidance counselor to discuss class scheduling and preparing for college?
It is never too early to start preparing for college. Call your child’s guidance counselor and make an appointment.
How do I find out information about SAT preparation courses?
Every spring, BLA offers SAT prep at Boston Latin Academy taught by BLA faculty in preparation for the May and June tests. The classes are open to juniors; however, if there is any open space in classes, sophomores may also participate. Classes take place two days after school for six weeks. Cost of the course was $65 in 2010 and students received a $50 reward for perfect attendance. Information about the course will be posted on the guidance web site and sent home with students. If students are unable to take the BLA course, we encourage students to take the course with Let’s Get Ready or at MIT. Both courses are very affordable.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT & FUNDRAISING:
What parent volunteer opportunities are available and how do I find out about them?
Parents interested in volunteering can visit the parent page on our website click on Volunteer at Boston Latin Academy.
How do I become more involved in my child’s school life?
Go to school events such as Back to School Night and Open House.
Sign up online to Volunteer at Latin Academy.
Go to School Parent Council (SPC) meetings, which are held the first Wednesday of every month in the Hapgood Library. For more information, go to www.blaparents.org or contact the 2011-2012 President, Rosalind James.
Offer to chaperone on field trips.
Go to www.blaparents.org and subscribe to receive e-mails for the Daily Bulletin, which often lists volunteer opportunities.
What is Back to School Night?
Back to School Night is an evening event held at the school where parents follow their children’s class schedule and meet their children’s teachers. Each class lasts about 10 minutes. Teachers take that time to explain the class and their expectations. Parents can meet with guidance counselors during their child’s scheduled study hall. For SY2011-2012, Back to School Night already passed.
What is Open House?
Open House is an evening where parents and guardians can meet with teachers to discuss report cards and grades. Parent-Teacher conferences are brief and conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. If you must speak to a teacher at length, call the teacher and make an appointment for another time. For SY2011-2012, Open House is on January 19th from 6 to 8 p.m.
Are there any fundraising opportunities currently underway at the school and how can I help?
The Friends of Boston Latin Academy is a 501 (c)(3) organization founded by BLA parents that raises funds for BLA. Members work with the Headmaster to determine school needs and funding. For more information e-mail friendsofbla@gmail.com or contact one of the 2011-2012 Board Members, such as Kathleen Kirleis or Connie Manzi.
