- Encourage students to photograph school & community activities.
Student requirement: A digital camera & a willingness to share files with club members, the year-book community & other interested parties.
Upper Level Certamen Practice
- This course is for students in Latin III and higher who wish to practice certamen. The time will be spent studying for and practicing certamen questions in order to be prepared for state competitions.
Collage Art Club
French for Breakfast
- Conversation group for intermediate to advanced French students. We would like to have it be a “breakfast club” if we have permission.
Music Appreciation
- The students will experience music through listening. The Students will also learn to appreciate the basic elements of music appreciation and the history behind each piece of music heard. Included in the appreciation process, the students will be able to share their musical styles and taste, music history as it is applied to their cultural background, sounds, and musical instruments. In their role as listeners, the students will be exposed to similarities and differences in the music heard as it relates to culture and personal taste.
Academic Challenge/Euro Challenge
- Students will engage in academic games in preparation for the Euro Challenge, Academic Games and other academic competitions. Appropriate for students in grades 9-12. Last year’s Euro Challenge team was New England runner-up and several BLA students placed high enough in the academic games to go to the national competition.
The Academy Actors School-wide Drama Club.
- You must be a member of the Academy Actors to sign-up.
Any student who has performed in the annual musical is eligible.
Backgammon Club
- Backgammon is a game that uses principles of counting and probability. Players must plan strategic moves and anticipate countermoves against your opponent.
Book Club
- This is a reading club for avid book readers. All reading levels are welcomed!
Novel Writing
- Come to a relaxed environment where you can work on your masterpiece!
Intramural Basketball
- Students will be divided into teams to play competitive basketball games.
Model United Nations
- Students will learn about important world issues and debate solutions to major world problems. Students who participate in this activity will attend two Model UN conferences in which they will represent a country and work with other students from other schools to propose solutions to a major world issue. Prizes are awarded and lunch and snacks are provided at the conferences!
Mahjong Club
- Students will play Mahjong in groups of 4. Sets will be needed as only 4 people can play with each set. I have one set so students who sign up and have sets will need to bring them in.
AP Calculus help
- Only open to students taking calculus.
Intro to Computer Hardware
- Students will be provided with an introduction to computer hardware construction, maintenence and repair using an A+ curriculum developed by Hewlett Packard.
National Society of Black Engineers
- Activities to help students discover firsthand how engineering and technology relate to the world around them and discover the excitement of academic excellence, leadership, technical development and teamwork. All are welcome.
Scholastic Jeopardy
- Students are asked trivia questions in a variety of subjects. It is an individual and team competition.
Moslem Student Association
- Open to all students. To provide better understanding/awareness of Islamic culture, history, food, and the Arabic language.
Scrapbooking Club
- Make a creative scrapbook of important events or people in your life.
Mythology and More
- (For grade 7 only) We will learn about ancient Greek and Roman mythology and culture, and then play a game using the buzzer machine. This game is an introduction to the competitive academic sport of Certamen. Official membership in the BLA Classics Club is not a requirement to be a part of this AA club.

Très Français, Trop Cool
- Come and read French novels and spruce up your grammar. French IV is not being offered this year, so this course will offer a snapshot of the major works and lessons from the course. Prerequisite: You must have completed French III or be a native speaker of French.
Dragon Tales - Student Newspaper
- The Dragon Tales is the official student newspaper of Boston Latin Academy. Students from grades 7-12 who are interested in writing, reporting, editing, photography, and art re all welcome to work on the newspaper either in AA or after school.

Classic Films
- Explore movies from the past (and near present), with a broken-down ex-actor. Boring analysis and history, no input, and fervent reverence (Bogart, Dean, Brando, Monroe, etc. ARE deities, arguments are not tolerated) required. Hocker Groupies given preference, and popcorn. Open to grades 9-graduated.
Japanese Cultural Club
- This popular club is open to 7th and 8th graders only. Students will gain knowledge of Japanese culture, including both traditional and pop cultures, and some language through fun and educational activities.
Chinese Game Club
- In this Game Club, students will learn and have fun in all kinds of traditional Chinese games, such as Majang, Chinese checkers, Chinese chess etc. Yay!
Greenhouse Club

- Advanced chemistry preparation for the SAT 2 test along with providing an edge for those who love chemistry and want to excel in it. Juniors and Seniors only.
Stephen Colbert / Jon Stewart Club
- Catch up on the latest from the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. Lots of laughs while learning and discussing the world today. Open to grades 9-12. Refreshments often provided.
Mock Trial
- Participate in the Mass Bar Association Mock Trial program. The MBA provides a case, and the team must come up with a defense and prosecution.

- This club is open to high school students. If middle school students are interested they need to get special permission from Mr. Lansana. Students must know how to play chess.

Novice Certamen
- Open to 8th grade and 9B students. Students will learn Greek mythology, Roman history and culture and practice on buzzer machines. Warning: This class is highly addictive.
Yearbook
- (Seniors only.) In order to be on the yearbook you must go through an application process. Please see Mrs. MacIsaac in room 310 for details.
“Family Game Night” Prep
- Learn new games to teach to your families for “Family Game Night.” Examples: Card games such as Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Uno, Skipbo. Board games such as Clue, Sorry, Pictionary. Dice games such as Dominoes (no video games or the like!) Who will be the winner?
Irish Culture Club
- Students will experience the culture, history, language, customs, and food of the Ireland. Students must be willing to participate in Irish activities, including singing and dancing.
Art Appreciation
- We will appreciate art together. Activities might include creating illustrations for publication, viewing and discussing art, and collaborating on a public art project.
Preteen Issues
- (Open only to 7th grade girls) In this activity, we discuss issues such as nutrition, peer pressure, body image, and healthy relationships. We watch movies, read materials, and have open discussions about Pre-Teen concerns.
Origami 1 (7TH GRADE)
- Origami 1 is an introduction to the art of Origami. Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. The goal of this art is to create a representation of an object using geometric folds and crease patterns preferably without gluing or cutting the paper, and using only one piece of paper.
Cribbage Club
- Students will learn how to play cribbage. All levels welcome!
Science in Films Series
- Science is everywhere! Come learn whether science in movies is real or science . . fiction!
Art Club
- Stop doodling on all those binders and start putting that creativity to work! Relax, have fun and express yourself at the same time. - Beginning and advanced weight training for girls and boys. Juniors and Seniors have 1st choice. (Limited to 10 students.)
History Movies
- Learn about exciting events in history through film. Plus you will have an expert to tell you what is history and what is just hollywood’s take on history.
7th grade Garden Club
- Does talking to plants help them grow? You will soon find out! Grow plants from seed and cuttings, and learn to care for plants.
7th grade board games
- Students will be allowed to play board games and learn winning strategies–which is anything but a “bored” game. Limited to 20 students.
The Politics of Music
- This group will listen to songs from the 1960s through today and discuss the political messages the artists are trying to convey. We will look at rap, alternative, rock, pop, etc–no musical genre is off limits. Students in this group will be required to speak during the discussions.
Student Forum
- This is the official student government organization of Boston Latin Academy in which student representatives elected by homeroom represent all BLA students in an annual effort to improve school issues internally and in the Boston Public Schools. Dr. Properzio is the faculty advisor.
Amnesty USA at BLA
- To learn more about how human rights are violated around the world and what we (That means you!) can do about it. Limited to 35 students.
Latin Dance
- Latin dance is a dance group in which we do salsa, merengue, bachata, and other dances.
Chemistry in the News Club
- Get a better understanding of chemistry and how it affects your daily life. Make chemistry work in your favor!
Advanced Biology Booster
- For students enrolled in Honors and AP Biology, this AA will provide time and assistance for students to meet in groups, work together on their homework assignments and to ask a Biology Teacher for help with difficult concepts or assignments.
Bogart & Hitchcock Film Fest
- For serious film students. The feature films of Sir Alfred Hitchcock and American icon Humphrey Bogart will be shown and discussed.
Fashion Club
- Learn about fashion, the politics of fashion; who decides what is fashion? and how anything can become fashion?
Jabberwock
- Students will write, edit, gather material, fundraise and work on publishing and selling the BLA literary magazine. Students will also run contests for the magazine. Participation is by approval from Mrs. Shah (311).
Soccer Strategies
- Learn the science of soccer through studies of the greatest teams that ever played. This is a great chance for ANYONE to improve their understanding of the sport, their role in the game, and enhance tactical knowledge. Knowing how to maximize your impact while minimizing effort will make you a valuable addition to any team.
Wind Ensemble (Honors Band)
- Required class for members of the Wind Ensemble. A list will be provided. Students in the Wind Ensemble are excluded from other AA courses unless allowed by Mr. Van Lenten
Gridiron Club
- Open to all students but geared to those on or wish to be on the BLA Football Team. Focus is on academic eligibility and excellence. (Year round progress report). Activities include breakdown of game films, skill acquisitions, and formation of playbook. Student/athletes will also use the class to further their college interests (i.e. filling out recruitment questioning and establishing contacts with college coaches).
