The aim of the Boston Latin Academy Music Program is to provide all students at BLA with with best possible music education. Students learn to appreciate, understand, and perform music from all idioms, styles, and cultures through classroom instruction and performances. Please note that there is currently no string or piano instruction provided at Boston Latin Academy (though we’re working on it!)
Course Descriptions (note: all bands and choirs perform in concerts)
(note: playing in band requires a $40 instrument rental fee for those renting instruments from the school. Scholarships are available.)
Beginning Band:
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Students wishing to play a band instrument may sign up for once a week classes in their instrument.
Concert Band:
Prerequisite: approval of music director or completion of the beginning band course or equivalent. Recommended for students with at least one year of instruction on their instrument and the ability to read music. Twice a week rehearsals during school.
Wind Ensemble:
Prerequisite: approval of music director. Recommended for students with at least three years of instruction on their instrument and the ability to read music at a high level. Three times a week rehearsals during school.
7th Grade Choir:
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. All incoming seventh grade students are eligible.
Women’s Choir:
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. All eighth and ninth grade girls are eligible.
Concert Choir:
Prerequisite: approval of music director. All 8th – 12th boys are eligible; all 10th through 12th girls are eligible. Ability to read music at a basic level required as those topics will be covered in 7th grade and women’s choirs. Three times a week during school.
Chamber Singers:
Audition only select performance group. Prerequisite: must be a concert choir member. This group meets after school once a week.
Jazz Band:
Audition only select performance group. Prerequisite: music be a band member unless playing drums, bass, guitar, or piano. This group meets after school once a week
Music Theory:
Prerequisite: ability to read music at a basic level. 11th and 12th graders are eligible. Full Class meets five days a week.
