Welcome New Headmaster!

Emilia Pastor has been appointed by Superintendent Carol R. Johnson as the new Headmaster of Boston Latin Academy. Ms. Pastor has served as the Interim Headmaster at Boston Latin Academy since August 2009. She has also served as Assistant Headmaster at Boston Latin Academy for two years where she headed student support and was involved with hiring and supervision of teachers and guidance counselors. Prior to coming to Boston Latin Academy, Ms. Pastor served as an Assistant Headmaster at Charlestown High School. She has teaching experience in both New York City Public Schools and two charter schools in Philadelphia. Her many years of experience as a school administrator and as a teacher make her an excellent fit to continue the strong work at Boston Latin Academy. Congratulations Ms. Pastor!

Exciting 2010 Summer Reading Lists Have Arrived!!!

This year’s summer reading includes an exciting addition: the Summer 2010 BLA Common Reading Book: Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder. This book was chosen through a careful and thoughtful process by a thirteen-member panel of BLA parents, faculty and students. Overall, we believe that this book is the perfect choice to be read by all BLA students in grades 7-12. I encourage parents/guardians and faculty to read the book as well!
We will be conducting book talks, lectures and activities related to Strength in What Remains throughout the coming school year. It is my hope that this common reading text increases summer reading as well as provides a link between the grades and the larger, wonderful BLA community. Check out this New York Times book review to whet your appetite! http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/books/review/Suskind-t.html
This summer’s requirements also features a 12th grade WRITING requirement. Spurred from a Parents’ Council meeting, this year rising seniors will choose two college “Common Application” prompts, draft two complementary essays and submit them to business leaders from a BLA partner, Bain and Company. This is a great opportunities for BLA’s rising seniors to get an early start on their college essays — as well as gain valuable insight from Boston business leaders. Combined with the expertise of our senior English teachers, our Class of 2011 will have a clear advantage in their college essays. See the summer reading attachment for more information.
Additionally, look for exciting news of a BLA Book Fair from 10 AM-4 PM in the upper library on June 16th. This event will be hosted by our fabulous librarians, Ms. Estrada and Ms. Moniz, and will be an opportunity for all members of the BLA community to purchase summer reading books at reduced rates.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this summer reading process — and HAPPY SUMMER READING!
